Fishing Trip Cost Calculator: Plan Your Fishing Trip Budget

How much does a fishing trip cost? It depends on where you fish and how. A morning on the bank with a pack of worms might cost $20. A deep sea fishing charter in Florida or a guided salmon trip in Alaska can cost thousands. Our free fishing trip cost calculator brings every cost together: fishing license or rod licence, bait, tackle, boat rental, fishing charter or party boat fees, fishing guide fees, tips, travel, lodging and food.

You get the total fishing trip budget, the cost per angler, the cost per angler per day and even your cost per fish. It works for freshwater and saltwater fishing, fly fishing, bass fishing, trout fishing, carp fishing, sea angling and offshore trips, in the USA and the UK. All prices are in US dollars.

How to use the fishing trip budget calculator

  1. Enter your trip: the number of anglers, fishing days, nights away and (for fun) how many fish you expect to catch.
  2. Choose your licence. Pick a typical US state fishing license or UK rod licence, or enter your own price. Add any stamps, tags or day tickets.
  3. Add bait and tackle: bait per angler per day, tackle and lures you expect to lose or buy, and any rod and reel rental.
  4. Choose a boat: shore fishing, a self-drive rental boat, a private charter or a party (head) boat.
  5. Add a guide and tips if you are hiring a fishing guide.
  6. Add travel, lodging, food and fish cleaning or processing.

How much does a fishing license cost?

US fishing license prices

Every US state sets its own prices. Residents pay much less than visitors. Typical prices are:

License type Typical price
Resident annual freshwater license $20–$50
Non-resident 1-day license $10–$30
Non-resident 3- to 7-day license $25–$60
Non-resident annual license $50–$160
Saltwater license (resident) $15–$35
Trout stamp / salmon tag / special permit $5–$30

Many charter boats hold a vessel license that covers everyone on board, so you may not need your own. Children under a certain age (often 16) usually fish free.

UK rod licence prices

In England and Wales, anyone aged 13 or over fishing for freshwater fish needs an Environment Agency or Natural Resources Wales rod licence. Approximate prices converted to US dollars are:

UK rod licence (trout & coarse) Approx. USD
1-day licence ≈ $9
8-day licence ≈ $18
12-month licence ≈ $48
Salmon & sea trout 12-month licence ≈ $110

A rod licence is not the same as permission to fish. On most UK rivers, lakes and canals you also need a day ticket or club permit ($10–$40 a day). Sea fishing from the shore in the UK normally needs no licence. Scotland has no national rod licence, but you still need a permit from the owner of the fishing rights.

Fishing boat rental, charter and guide prices

Option Typical US price Who it suits
Self-drive rental boat (jon boat, pontoon) $100–$350 per day + fuel Lakes and calm bays, experienced anglers
Party / head boat $50–$120 per person Budget sea fishing, beginners, families
Private inshore charter (4–6 hours) $450–$800 per boat Small groups, redfish, snook, stripers
Private offshore charter (full day) $1,200–$2,500+ per boat Tuna, mahi, marlin, grouper
Freshwater fishing guide (full day, 2 anglers) $350–$650 Bass, trout, walleye, musky
Fly fishing float trip guide $450–$750 Trout rivers in Montana, Colorado, Idaho

In the UK, a skippered sea angling charter typically costs $600–$1,000 a day for the boat (about £500–£800), usually shared by 6–10 anglers, or $60–$120 per person on a shared trip.

Tipping: In the US, it is customary to tip a fishing guide or charter crew 15–20% of the trip price, in cash. The calculator adds this for you. Tipping is less expected in the UK, but always appreciated.

The fishing trip cost formula

Licences = Anglers × (Licence + Stamps)
Bait & tackle = Anglers × (Bait × Days + Tackle)
Boat = Days × Boat rate (party boat: × Anglers)
Tips = (Guide fee + Charter fee) × Tip %
Total = Licences + Bait & tackle + Boat + Fuel + Guide + Tips + Travel + Lodging + Food + Cleaning

US example: a two-day lake fishing trip for two

Two friends from out of state buy 3-day non-resident licenses ($35 each). They spend $10 each per day on bait and $25 each on tackle, and $8 a day on ice. They rent a boat for one day ($200 + $40 fuel), drive $80 of fuel, stay one night ($120) and spend $25 each per day on food, plus $20 for fish cleaning.

  • Licences: $70 · Bait: $40 · Tackle: $50 · Ice: $16
  • Boat and fuel: $240 · Travel: $80 · Lodging: $120 · Food: $100 · Cleaning: $20
  • Total: $736, or $368 per angler

UK example: a day on a trout fishery

One angler buys a 1-day rod licence (≈ $9), a fishery day ticket (≈ $35), $5 of flies they expect to lose, and spends $25 on fuel and $15 on food. Total: about $89.

10 ways to save money on a fishing trip

  1. Buy an annual licence if you will fish more than two or three times.
  2. Share a private charter with friends – the price is per boat, not per person.
  3. Try a party boat for sea fishing at a fraction of a charter’s price.
  4. Book a half-day guide instead of a full day.
  5. Catch or collect your own bait where it is legal.
  6. Tie your own flies and rigs.
  7. Fish public piers and shore spots with free access.
  8. Travel mid-week and outside peak seasons.
  9. Camp instead of staying in a lodge – see our camp stove fuel calculator.
  10. Split fuel fairly with the carpool cost splitter.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a fishing trip cost?

A simple day of shore fishing can cost $20–$50 per person. A guided freshwater trip usually costs $175–$350 per angler per day, and an offshore charter $200–$600+ per angler when the boat is shared. Use the calculator to add licences, bait, boat, travel and food.

How much does a fishing charter cost?

In the US, private inshore charters usually cost $450–$800 for a half day and offshore charters $1,200–$2,500+ for a full day, per boat. Party or head boats cost about $50–$120 per person.

How much should I tip a fishing guide?

In the US, 15–20% of the guide or charter fee is customary, paid in cash at the end of the trip. On charters with a mate, the tip is usually shared between captain and crew.

How much is a fishing license for a non-resident?

Non-resident fishing licenses in the US usually cost $10–$30 for one day, $25–$60 for 3–7 days and $50–$160 for a year, depending on the state.

Do I need a rod licence to fish in the UK?

In England and Wales, anyone aged 13 or over needs a rod licence to fish for freshwater fish, salmon, sea trout or eels. You also need permission or a day ticket from the owner of the fishing. Sea fishing from the shore does not need a licence.

Is it cheaper to rent a fishing boat or book a charter?

A self-drive rental boat ($100–$350 a day plus fuel) is cheaper than a charter, but you need your own skills, tackle and local knowledge. A charter costs more but includes a captain, gear, licences on many boats, and a much better chance of catching fish.
