Surfboard rental vs bringing your own board
This is where the biggest savings are. Here is how the maths works:
Rental cost = cheapest of (Surf days × Daily rate) and (Weeks × Weekly rate)
Bring-your-own cost = Boards × (Airline fee × Flights + Ding repairs) + Board bag + Transfer surcharges
Break-even surf days = Bring-your-own cost ÷ Daily rental rate
Example: a one-week surf trip for two
Two surfers fly to a surf town for 7 nights and surf 6 days. A board costs $30 a day or $150 a week to rent. Bringing a board costs $150 each way on the airline, plus $30 for ding repairs and $20 for taxi surcharges.

Here, renting saves $400. Bringing your own board only pays off after about 12 surf days at the daily rate – or if you fly with an airline that carries boards free, or you need a specific board for bigger waves.
With flights ($450 each), lodging ($120 a night), car hire ($45 a day), food ($35 per person per day), insurance, wetsuit hire, two group lessons each and extras, the whole trip costs about $3,490, or $1,745 per surfer.
Airline surfboard fees: what to expect
Airline policies change often, so always check before you book. As a guide:

Tip: Most airlines charge per bag, not per board. Packing two or three boards in one coffin bag can make bringing your own much cheaper. Enter the fee per bag and set “boards per surfer” to 1 if you share a bag.
