Kayak & Canoe Trip Cost Calculator: What Does a Paddling Trip Really Cost?
A day on the river looks cheap until you add everything up. There is the kayak rental or canoe hire, the river shuttle back to your car, launch fees, parking, dry bags, and lunch. Our free kayak trip cost calculator puts all of these into one budget. It shows the total paddling trip cost, the cost per person, the cost per boat and the cost per day on the water.
It works for solo kayaks, sit-on-top kayaks, tandem kayaks, open canoes (called Canadian canoes in the UK) and stand-up paddle boards (SUP). You can plan a two-hour lake paddle, a full-day river float, or a multi-day canoe camping trip in the Boundary Waters, the Adirondacks, the Everglades, the Scottish Highlands or on the River Wye. All costs are in US dollars.
How to use the kayak and canoe cost calculator
- Enter your group. Add the number of paddlers, the days on the water and any nights camping.
- Pick your boat type. The calculator fills in a typical kayak rental price and works out how many boats you need. For example, 4 paddlers need 2 tandem kayaks or 2 canoes.
- Add rental details. Enter the price per boat per day and any multi-day discount. Tick “We own our boats” if you are bringing your own.
- Add shuttle and launch fees. Enter the kayak shuttle cost per person or per boat, any vehicle shuttle, launch fees, parking and permits.

How much does it cost to rent a kayak or canoe?
Rental prices depend on the boat, the location and the season. These are typical 2020s prices at US outfitters and UK hire centres, converted to US dollars:

Most canoe rental and kayak hire prices include paddles and life jackets. Popular rivers in summer, national parks and coastal tourist towns are at the top of the range. In the UK, canoe hire on rivers such as the Wye, the Spey or in the Lake District often includes a return minibus shuttle in the price.
River shuttle costs explained
On a river trip you usually start (put in) and finish (take out) in different places. A river shuttle gets you, your boats or your car between them. There are three common types:
- Outfitter shuttle. The livery drives you and the boats to the put-in. Usually $10–$30 per person, or included in the rental.
- Boat-only shuttle. You bring your own kayaks and pay $5–$20 per boat to have them carried.
- Vehicle shuttle. A driver moves your car to the take-out. Expect $40–$150, more on long wilderness rivers.

Launch fees, parking and permits
Many lakes, reservoirs and state parks charge a kayak launch fee of $3–$15 per boat per day. Some rivers need a river permit, and some parks charge an entry fee per person or per vehicle. In England and Wales, many rivers and canals need a paddling licence or a day pass. Membership of Paddle UK (formerly British Canoeing) includes a waterways licence for many of these. The kayak trip cost formula
Boat rental = Boats × Days × Daily rate × (1 − Discount)
Shuttles = People × Shuttle per person + Boats × Boat shuttle + Vehicle shuttle
Total = Rental + Shuttles + Launch + Parking + Permits + Camping + Gear + Travel + Food
Cost per person = Total ÷ Paddlers
US example: a day float for four
Four friends rent two canoes at $60 a day on an Ozarks river. The outfitter shuttle is $15 each, and each boat costs $10 to shuttle. There is a $5 launch fee per boat and $10 parking. They budget $5 each for dry bags, $30 for fuel and $15 each for food.
- Rental: 2 × $60 = $120
- Shuttles: 4 × $15 + 2 × $10 = $80
- Launch and parking: $10 + $10 = $20
- Gear, travel, food: $20 + $30 + $60 = $110, plus $40 of gear bought
- Total: $370, or $92.50 per person
UK example: a two-day Wye canoe trip
Two people hire one open canoe for two days at about $70 a day (≈ £55), including the minibus shuttle. They camp one night at a riverside campsite ($25) and spend $20 each per day on food. The total is about $245, or $122.50 each.
Should you rent or buy a kayak?
A basic recreational kayak costs $300–$900 new, a canoe $600–$1,500 and an inflatable SUP $300–$800. Add a paddle ($50–$150), a life jacket ($50–$120) and roof bars or a trailer. - Rent if you paddle a few times a year, travel to different places, or want to try different boats.
- Buy if you paddle more than 8–12 days a year near home and have space to store a boat.

Safety costs you should never skip
A properly fitted life jacket (PFD) for every paddler is essential. It is required by the US Coast Guard on US waters and strongly recommended in the UK.
