The golf break-even formula
Pay-as-you-play cost per round = Average green fee + Cart fee
Membership fixed cost = Dues + Initiation ÷ Years + F&B minimum + Extras
Break-even rounds = Membership fixed cost ÷ (Pay-as-you-play cost per round − Member cost per round)
Example: 30 rounds a year
You play 30 rounds a year, 40% at weekends. Green fees are $55 on weekdays and $75 at weekends (average $63), and a cart costs $20. A local club charges $2,400 a year in dues plus $100 for lockers, assessments and affiliation, and members pay $15 for a cart. You spend $22 a round on balls, food and travel, and $400 a year on clubs and practice.

At 30 rounds, paying green fees saves $460. The break-even point is $2,500 ÷ ($83 − $15) = 37 rounds a year – about three rounds a month. Play more than that and the membership is cheaper.
