Annual Outdoor Hobby Cost Calculator: What Does Your Hobby Really Cost Per Year?

Most people have no idea what their hobby really costs. The tent was a one-off, the park pass is only $80, and each camping weekend is “just” $150 – but add it all up and the total can be a surprise. Our free annual hobby cost calculator adds up your gear, trips and memberships to show the true yearly cost of your outdoor hobby, plus the cost per month, per week and per outing.

The key is that gear is spread over its lifespan. A $350 tent that lasts 7 years really costs $50 a year. Start from hiking and camping, fishing, skiing or snowboarding, or kayaking and paddle sports, or build your own list for any hobby – cycling, climbing, hunting, golf, birdwatching or photography. All costs are in US dollars.

How to use the hobby cost calculator

  1. Choose a starting hobby to load typical example items, or start blank.
  2. List your gear with its price and how many years it lasts.
  3. List your trips and outings – how many a year and what each costs (fuel, food, lodging, lift tickets, guides).
  4. List passes and memberships such as park passes, season passes, licences, club fees and app subscriptions.
  5. Add consumables and repairs such as stove gas, bait, wax and servicing.

The yearly hobby cost formula

Gear per year = Σ (Price ÷ Years it lasts)
Trips per year = Σ (Trips × Cost per trip)
True yearly cost = Gear per year + Trips + Passes & memberships + Consumables + Repairs
Cost per outing = True yearly cost ÷ Number of outings

Example: hiking and camping

Category Details Per year
Gear Tent, sleeping bag & pad, backpack, boots, rain jacket, stove – $1,300 of gear spread over 2–8 years $274.58
Trips 6 camping weekends × $150, 20 day hikes × $15, one $1,500 summer trip $2,700.00
Passes & memberships National park pass $80, hiking app $36, club $40 $156.00
Consumables & repairs Stove gas, trail food, sunscreen, gear repairs $280.00
Total 27 outings $3,410.58 – $284.22 a month, $126.32 per outing

Notice that gear – the thing most people worry about – is only about 8% of the yearly cost. Trips are where the money goes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out what my hobby costs per year?

Divide each piece of gear’s price by the years it lasts, add the cost of all your trips and outings, then add passes, memberships, consumables and repairs. The calculator does this and shows the cost per month and per outing.

Why spread gear over its lifespan?

Because you don’t buy a new tent every year. Spreading the price over its useful life gives a fair yearly cost and lets you compare gear with trips and memberships.

How much does hiking and camping cost per year?

Casual hikers and campers often spend $500–$1,500 a year, and keen campers who take a big trip each year spend $2,500–$5,000, mostly on travel rather than gear.

What counts as an outing?

Every trip in your trips list counts – each day hike, camping weekend or ski day. The calculator divides your yearly total by the number of outings to show your cost per outing.

Is my list saved?

The calculator does not store your list. Use “Copy results” or “Print” to keep a copy.
